So which is it?

I've been baking a lot of cakes recently. Not good for the waist line but excellent for the soul. They come quite high up in my list of comfort food. I love the look of them with pretty coloured icing, all the varieties of sprinkles. Then when I bite into one the creamy taste of the butter melting in my mouth takes me right back to those days when I baked them as a child with my mum on a Saturday afternoon. The problem I have though is what do I call them? We have always referred to them as Fairy Cakes but over the last few years everyone seems to have changed to use the American name of Cupcakes. I Googled both and it seems it can be either name depending on whether you wan to be British or American. I quite like both names but I think the males in my house prefer to call them Fairy cakes. They say is because cupcakes are the size of muffins and mine aren't and also we're British so shouldn't copy the Americans. What do you call them?

Last weekends Easter Fairy/Cup cakes

This weekend I've made Girly Fairy/Cup cakes

The cakes look delicious! I always think of a fairy cake as a delicate cake with a fondant type of icing and a cup cake as deep cake with a creamy concoction on the top!

They look lovely, Rosie - I'm trying to remember back to what we used to call them other than little buns as a cake was Victoria sponge sized. Mum used to make butterfly buns, we definitely didn't call them cup cakes as they were the larger bought ones - chocolate with a thick soft fondant icing top that used to cling to the wrapper; possibly fairy cakes but we also called those little pink and yellow 'french fancies' fairy cakes too.
If I had to choose I'd go for fairy cakes.

Ooh, lovely cakes. If I use a muffin tray, they're cupcakes, otherwise they're fairy cakes (or fairy buns, as we used to call them). I also associate cupcakes with lashings of buttercream and quite elaborate decorations.
